What Is a Passkey Wallet?

A passkey wallet is a crypto wallet that uses a passkey — the device-based credential behind passwordless logins — to secure or approve access instead of asking the user to write down a seed phrase. The passkey lives in your phone or computer's secure hardware and unlocks with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN.

Passkeys are built on the same WebAuthn standard used for passwordless website logins. In wallets, they typically either protect the app and the keys it stores, or — in smart-account designs — act as the signing credential itself, so "your key" is something your device guards and syncs rather than a phrase you transcribe.

How a Passkey Wallet Works

1. During setup, your device's secure hardware generates a passkey; no phrase is shown to write down.

2. The passkey (or a key it protects) authorizes wallet actions after a biometric or PIN check.

3. Depending on the platform, the passkey syncs through your device ecosystem's account, so a new phone can restore access.

4. Losing every synced device — or the platform account — can mean losing the wallet, so backup paths matter.

Trade-Offs to Understand

• Easier onboarding: nothing to write down, nothing to mistype.

• Phishing resistance: passkeys are bound to their origin, so fake sites can't request them.

• New dependencies: recovery may hinge on your Apple, Google, or password-manager account.

• Portability: moving between ecosystems or wallets can be harder than importing a phrase.
