Multisig

In Brief

Multisig (multi-signature) is a security setup that requires more than one private key to authorize a crypto transaction — for example, 2 of 3 keys — reducing the risk of theft or a single point of failure.

Multisig

What Is Multisig?

Multisig — short for multi-signature — is a security arrangement that requires multiple private keys to approve a single cryptocurrency transaction, rather than just one. A common setup is "2-of-3," meaning any two of three designated keys must sign before funds can move.

By spreading control across multiple keys (and often multiple people or devices), multisig removes the single point of failure that comes with a lone private key, making it harder for a thief or a single compromised device to drain funds.

How Does Multisig Work?

  1. A multisig wallet is configured with a total number of keys (e.g. 3) and a required threshold (e.g. 2).

  2. To send a transaction, the required number of keyholders must each sign it.

  3. If fewer than the threshold sign, the transaction cannot execute.

  4. Keys can be held by different people, on different devices, or in different locations.

Why Use Multisig?

Multisig vs Single-Signature Wallets

A standard ("single-sig") wallet needs just one private key to move funds — simple, but a single point of failure. Multisig adds resilience and shared control at the cost of more setup and coordination. It's especially valued for securing large holdings or organizational treasuries.

Multisig and Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet is a non-custodial wallet where you control your own private keys and secure your funds with your secret recovery phrase across 100+ blockchains. Whatever security model you use, the core principle of self-custody holds: only you control access to your assets. For high-value or shared funds, many users also explore multisig setups as an additional layer of protection.
