In Brief

The flippening is a hypothetical event in which Ethereum's total market value overtakes Bitcoin's — a milestone watched as a barometer of whether the market values programmable smart-contract platforms above digital gold.

Flippening

What Is the Flippening?

The flippening is a hypothetical future event in which Ethereum's total market capitalization overtakes Bitcoin's, making ETH the most valuable cryptocurrency. It has not happened; the term names a possibility that traders and commentators have debated for years, and a ratio they watch as a barometer of where the market believes crypto's value ultimately lies.

More broadly, "flippening" is sometimes used for any moment one crypto asset or metric overtakes a long-standing leader — but the ETH-over-BTC event is the canonical meaning.

How the Flippening Is Measured

  1. Market capitalization — price multiplied by circulating supply — is calculated for both assets.

  2. The ETH/BTC ratio of those market caps is the tracked number; a ratio above one means the flippening has occurred.

  3. The ratio has risen and fallen through market cycles without crossing the line.

  4. Some analysts also compare other metrics — transaction fees, trading volume, developer activity — where the picture differs from market cap alone.

What the Debate Is Really About
